What counts as Hospitality and tourism

Hospitality is section I of the classification and has exactly two divisions: accommodation and food and beverage service. Travel agencies and tour operators statistically belong to other business services (division 79); we include them here because they are of interest to the same suppliers.

The official titles are unusually specific. Class 56.10 is called “restaurants, inns, snack bars, cafés, ice cream parlours and the like” and does not separate the kebab stand from the Michelin-starred restaurant.

A licence, yes – a register, no

There is no nationwide, publicly accessible directory for hospitality. That sets the industry apart from the liberal professions or financial intermediation.

Restaurant licence
Under the federal Restaurant Act, anyone who wants to run a restaurant business needs a licence (§ 2 GastG). The provision does not provide for a register. States with their own restaurant act may deviate: in Brandenburg, for example, a notification is enough (§ 2 BbgGastG).
Insolvency protection for tour operators
Tour operators must protect customer payments against their own insolvency and hand the traveller a security certificate (§ 651r BGB). This is an obligation towards the customer, not a public company directory.
The businesses’ legal notices
The most important public source in this industry is the business’s own website: operator, address and email address are in the legal notice (Impressum), usually a phone number too – provided the business has a website.

Not in the export

  • name of the venue if it differs from the company name
  • cuisine, number of seats and opening hours
  • number of rooms and star rating
  • ratings from review platforms
  • individual branches and hotels of a chain

These 15 columns are included.

The name on the door is not the company

The commercial register lists the operating company, not the restaurant. “Zur Post Gastronomie GmbH” may run the “Alte Post” inn – or three venues with completely different names. If you send letters, you should know whether you are writing to the venue or the operator.

Conversely, one record per company means that chains and hotel groups only appear at the company’s registered office. The individual venues of a chain are not separate records.

When the operator changes, the name of the venue often stays the same while the company, phone number and contact person change. Ask about the data status date before you print a mailing.

Example request

We supply restaurants with coffee and machines and are looking for businesses in classes 56.10 and 55.10 in Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein with a phone number. Snack bars probably cannot be separated – please tell us what the selection looks like without that separation and how recent the data is.

Questions

Hospitality and tourism: frequently asked questions

Not via the WZ code: class 56.10 groups them together. Narrowing down via the company name is only an approximation. We tell you before making an offer what can be achieved for your selection.

Private landlords are not businesses in the sense of the list. Commercial providers in group 55.2 are included insofar as they appear in the dataset’s sources.

We do not quote a reliable rate because we have no verified figure for it. What counts is the data status date, which we state with every offer.
